Anneke van der Weerd,
the creative brain
behind annekeVertaalt

My story

My interest in languages started at an early age. From the moment I had learned to read I went to the library every week and devoured one book after another. Only a few years later, I started writing imaginative stories.

I took my first steps towards becoming a professional translator in my second year at secondary school, when I had to translate a recipe from Dutch into German. I secretly hated German, but this assignment suited me down to the ground. Even then, I think I knew in the back of my mind that I would become a translator.

That’s why I enrolled at the School of Translation and Interpreting after one year at Conservatorium Maastricht. In the first decade of my career, I gained experience by working at two translation agencies. In 2019, I took the plunge, registered annekeVertaalt and started working freelance.

I am an all-round translator and enjoy working on a wide variety of topics from one day to the next. My added value is the creativity I infuse into the translation, to ensure it sounds just right. Even when the source text sounds slightly off, I make sure the translation flows smoothly.

Translator of medical, musical and miscellaneous texts from English into Dutch

I especially enjoy the variety of topics I work on. One day I might delve into child trauma, the next I’ll be translating a blog on sustainable construction, followed by programme notes for a classical concert. There’s never a dull moment!
